Ozone therapy is considered by some to be an effective disease fighting tool. Ozone works as a powerful antimicrobial agent, killing pathogenic cells. Ozone kills cells in the body by starting a process that creates free radicals, namely peroxides, that are damaging to cells.
You're probably familiar with free radicals as something we do our best to remove from our bodies through the consumption of sources of antioxidants like vitamin C and E.
Antioxidants are molecules that give up their electrons to change free radicals into safer molecules. Ozone does the opposite. It gives up its extra oxygen atoms, starting a process that creates free radicals that harm cells.
Because its molecule is made up of three oxygen atoms, ozone has extra electrons and is negatively charged. By giving away its electrons, a process called oxidizing, it changes other molecules by binding to them in a process called reduction. This process can create harmful free radicals like lipid peroxides which then break down the cell membrane of pathogens causing them to lose integrity and die. This process is often referred to as putting the body through acute oxidative stress.
So oxidative stress kills pathogenic cells, but how do we stop this process from occurring in our healthy cells? You may be thinking, why would I introduce something to my body that harms cells? Sure, it could destroy bacterial, viral, or even cancerous cells, but wouldn't this hurt my healthy cells? This is really the crux of what makes medical ozone sometimes controversial and misunderstood.
The reason ozone is believed to not harm healthy cells is that these cells have antioxidant enzymes like catalase that support their defense. So if we can encourage healthy cell defense by balancing the body's antioxidants, the introduction of ozone as a pro-oxidant should only harm pathogenic cells that don't have this defensive support.
Oxidative stress is believed to be rapidly corrected by the antioxidant system in our body while killing disease cells. Another considered benefit of ozone is that once it has donated its extra electrons, we're left with oxygen, an essential molecule involved in the process of synthesizing energy in our body the Krebs cycle.
A part of cellular respiration uses oxygen to break down nutrients to create energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate or ATP. Ozone's oxidation provides extra oxygen to this important process, increasing cellular respiration energy production and promoting health.
This is a complicated process to understand, but simply put, ozone has the potential to start a process that creates free radicals that harm disease cells and do minimal damage to healthy cells. And it introduces more oxygen to healthy cells to promote their function.
While the inhalation of ozone gas directly can be toxic to your lungs, you can introduce your body to ozone safely in other beneficial ways, including applying it to your skin under a protective covering, dissolving small amounts of ozone gas into oil or water and ingesting it, and mixing it with your blood through an IV called autohemotherapy.
The basic reason people get weak and frail as they age is the same reason that people develop diseases. It's because of an inability to adequately extract energy from oxygen. As that happens our cells become deprived of the energy they need and just like the EverReady bunny they start to slow down and lose function. And that spells D-I-S-E-A-S-E. Ozone therapy, along with a healthy lifestyle, corrects that problem and gives us the chance to live out our lives full of health and vitality.
The days of counting on our medical system to keep us and our families healthy are rapidly disappearing. In fact, the medical system is part of the problem. Remember, it is the third leading cause of death in America. Those of us who want to stay well and functional right up until the time we die are going to have to take matters into our own hands. And home ozone therapy is one of the most effective ways | know to accomplish that, not to mention all of the many ways it can save you money and trips to the doctor.
Let's first zoom in on what ozone therapy is. Let's talk about how it works, how its administered, and the kinds of things you see clinically and I'll share some my own stories... because I've been doing this at home for nearly 20 years. While it sounds like a good idea for people to do it at home, it can be dangerous.
Regular oxygen contains two oxygen atoms; ozone contains three... and that extra oxygen atom makes it a very unstable molecule such that when we put it in the human body... and you can put it in the human body in a lot of different ways... you can expose the blood to it - that's probably the most common way – you can also put it in various body cavities - you can inject it into joints - you can inject it into soft tissues - you can give it trans-dermally and in the sense of a sauna where the person's in a sauna and then you flood that sauna with gas that absorbs trans-dermally - but whatever way that you get the ozone in the body the very first thing that it does is instantaneously react with that third oxygen molecule such that in actuality the ozone is gone very quickly.
After you put it in the body you quickly end up with the reactive products, which are primarily lipo-peroxides or lipids that have been oxidized. So the ozone is gone, in essence, and you're left with this pile of lipo-peroxides that work locally. And that's what works all the magic of the ozone - these peroxides hang out and do stuff locally. Your body will also absorb these peroxides and they'll get systemic and they'll go all throughout your body and that's what mediates all the effects.
Peroxides are oxidative free radical species that are supposed to be bad for us. We take antioxidants, so why are these peroxides good for us? That's a great question. We're led to believe that free radicals are in fact bad. Nothing in our body that our body makes is bad. There's always a reason for it. It's not the substance itself that determines whether it's good or bad... it's the dose... and so oxidants are beneficial, and even free radicals in the correct dose, in the correct amount, are actually highly beneficial. That's what you get from exercise - free radicals, but the body adapts, things improve.
The first thing you are going to need is an ozone generator. Please be very careful when it comes to buying an ozone generator. There are more than a few manufacturers of ozone equipment that are selling generators that are not fit for medical use.
In the 1500's a very famous physician and scientist, Paracelsus, first pointed out that the most important thing about any medical therapy is the dose. Too low a dose will not work, and too high a dose can be harmful. The dose is critical. That is one reason why having a high quality generator and using pure grade oxygen is so important. An unreliable generator will not be able to deliver the right dose.
In order to understand dosing in ozone therapy you need to know what a gamma is. Ozone therapy dosing is determined in two ways: the volume or amount of the gas that is used and the gamma the gas is at. The volume is easy to understand. It just refers to the total amount of gas being used. Gamma refers to how much ozone is in the gas. Remember that when the gas comes out of the generator it is not pure ozone. It is a combination of oxygen and ozone. So the higher the gamma the more ozone is in the gas. Both the volume and the gamma will determine the correct dose.
When you get the generator the instructions will tell you how to properly set the machine and/or the regulator for the recommended gamma setting.
Although gamma has been a term that has been used for medical ozone applications for over 50 years, the international medical community is advocating discontinuing its use. So in the future and when you read any recent scientific literature on ozone you might not see the use of this term. The new term is mcgm/ml which means micrograms per milliliter. This is often expressed as ug/ml.
Here's how it works. One gamma equals 1 mcgm/ml or 1 ug/ml. Both of the terms mean that there is 1 microgram (1000th of a gram) of ozone in every milliliter of gas. Ozone water is made by bubbling ozone into cold, distilled water through a diffuser. The ozone should be at 80-90 gamma. And the time should be 10 minutes.
You can take up to 12 ounces of the ozonated water three times a day. For best results, take it on an empty stomach. Once the water has been ozonated it will immediately begin to lose its ozone content. So, it is important to use it right away. If stored in the refrigerator it will last about 24 hours. If frozen, it can last indefinitely.
The reason ozone works so well is because it is so much more reactive than oxygen. But because it is so highly reactive it can cause irritation. This is especially true for lung tissue. Ozone in a high enough concentration is irritating to the lungs. So be careful. if you accidentally take a whiff of some ozone at a concentration over 2-5 gamma you are likely to immediately feel a tightness in your chest and start coughing. Normally this is not a big problem because all you need to do is to relax, take a 1000 mg of vitamin C, and the feeling will go away in 10-20 minutes. And no matter how much you inhale it will not damage your lungs.
But if you have a history of asthma or any chronic lung disease (COPD) the irritation could be enough to trigger a breathing attack. So anyone with either of these two ailments needs to be especially careful to avoid breathing anything but the lowest concentrations.
To help avoid inhaling too much ozone the generator that you buy should have a "destructor" unit that will prevent any significant amounts of ozone getting in the air you breathe.
Ozone can also irritate other tissues although it takes much higher doses than it does to irritate the lungs. That's why you should be sure to follow the directions and only use the doses that are recommended for you. If you just do that you will never have a significant problem with ozone.
So now that you have the basic information on using ozone, specific treatments for disease or for health maintenance and the gamma recommendations may be found in Dr. Frank Shallenberger's book The Ozone Miracle.
