Neuroscientists describe your third eye (pineal gland) as the "pine cone" shaped gland in your brain, so whenever you see pine cones in religions and spiritual traditions, understand that it's a symbolic representation of your pineal gland, the pine cone shaped part of your brain.

In many Eastern spiritual traditions, they talk about your third eye without as much symbolism. They talk about your third eye chakra, and how if you can master pineal gland activation, you can tap into higher spiritual states of awareness.

One thing that neuroscientists have found is that your pineal gland gets calcified over time. This is well documented on brain scans, showing the pineal gland with white-fuzzy looking growth around it. This is what happens naturally due to toxins in our food and environment, and your pineal gland doesn't have the same blood/brain barrier as many other organs/glands, so you see it build up in your pineal gland.
