The More You Give, the Less You Receive

There's something most people get completely backwards about giving and receiving. They think the more they give, the more they'll receive. They're taught to give until it hurts, to sacrifice, to empty themselves for others. But what if this entire notion is the very thing keeping you trapped in lack? My name is Abdullah, and for

When you understand the hidden mechanics of consciousness, the principle becomes clear...

You cannot give what you do not have.

You cannot receive what you refuse to become.

Most people are trying to give from a state of poverty. And poverty consciousness, no matter how much it gives away, can only create more poverty.

But here's the secret that changes everything.

When you truly understand how giving and receiving operate through the law of consciousness, you discover that they are not two separate actions. They are one eternal movement. And those who grasp this become channels through which infinite abundance flows.

But first, you must do something most people refuse to do... something that exposes the real reason your giving has created lack instead of abundance. Let me take you back to when a desperate young dancer walked into my lecture hall in New York. His name was Neville Godard. He had been told about this Ethiopian mystic named Abdullah who taught ancient wisdom. He was unemployed, struggling, and like most people, he thought the answer to his problems was learning some technique or secret formula. But before I would teach him anything about manifesting wealth or success, I told him something that shocked him.

Neville, I said, you must first start with self. Find self. Don't be ashamed of the being you are. Discover it and start the changing of that self. You see, Neville thought he knew who he was, but he didn't. None of us do until we truly look. And what I saw when I looked at him was a young man who was afraid to receive, who believed he wasn't worthy, who thought poverty was somehow more spiritual than abundance. He was giving. Yes, he was kind, generous, but he was giving from a closed hand and a fearful heart. And here's what I taught him that day, what I'm teaching you now.

If you are afraid to give, it is a sure sign that your consciousness of God is very small... that you believe you have wrenched away from the source all that you can possibly get, and you will not let it go. But if you know that you are a medium and channel through which all good flows from the infinite to man, you will know that as long as the channel is open, there is plenty of substance to flow through it.

The problem isn't giving or receiving. The problem is the consciousness from which you're attempting to do either one. And that consciousness must change... not by force, not by technique, but by understanding what I call the seven laws of conscious circulation.

The first law - the closed hand creates poverty.

Let me tell you something that will sound like a paradox. The people who give the most often receive the least... not because giving doesn't work, but because they're giving from the wrong state of consciousness.

Imagine someone who gives constantly... money they don't have to every cause, time they don't have to every request, energy they don't have to every person. They exhaust themselves helping others. And yet they remain perpetually broke, sick, and resentful.

When someone like this comes asking why they're always in lack despite their generosity, I ask them a simple question: When you give, do you feel afraid? And almost always they realize that every time they give money, they think, "Now I won't have enough for myself." Every time they help someone, they worry, "What about my needs?" There it is. They're giving from fear, from a consciousness that believes there isn't enough... that they must sacrifice themselves to be good... that receiving is somehow selfish.

And here's the truth. The closed mind can receive no more than the closed hand. If your mind is shut up, grasping the seed of truth, it cannot grow and it cannot multiply. You must give to have, but you must give from abundance consciousness, not poverty consciousness.

The old idea of sacrifice is but the new idea of giving. The thing that we offer up is that which we get back tenfold. But there is a law back of this. When man gives from fear, afraid the well will run dry, afraid he won't have enough, he is affirming lack and consciousness creates after its kind... and his giving doesn't open him to receive... it confirms his belief in scarcity.

But when man gives from fullness, knowing he is a channel through which infinite supply flows, his giving becomes a declaration of abundance and reality must conform to that declaration. Whatever state of consciousness you give from, your assuming and that assumption becomes your reality.

The second law – you cannot give what you do not have.

Now, here's where most spiritual teaching gets it dangerously wrong. They tell you to give even when you're in lack, to sacrifice, to prove your faith by giving away what you need. But you cannot give what you do not have. You can hand over money you don't have. You can exhaust yourself helping others. You can martyr yourself for every cause, but you cannot give wealth consciousness when you're living in poverty consciousness. You cannot give peace when you're anxious. You cannot give love when you're empty.

What you give is not the thing. What you give is the consciousness. And if your consciousness is lack, that's what you're spreading. That's what you're multiplying. That's what's coming back to you ten-fold.

Think about someone who's been taught in their church that to be spiritual, they must give away everything. So they do. They give away their savings, give away their time, give away their energy, and they become bitter, exhausted, resentful of the very people they're trying to help. The problem, however, is they're not giving from abundance. They're giving from obligation, from guilt, from a belief that they must earn love or spiritual worth through sacrifice.

Here's the truth: To give health through understanding of principle, you must first possess health consciousness. To give wealth, you must first assume wealth. To give love, you must first be love. This is not selfishness. We cannot give wholeness from brokenness. We cannot channel abundance while believing in lack.

When someone understands this, truly understands it, everything changes. They stop the compulsive giving. They spend time finding self. They examine their consciousness without shame or judgment. And they discover they've been giving to prove they're worthy, to make up for feeling undeserving, to hide from their own poverty consciousness by focusing on others needs.

Once they see this clearly, they begin assuming abundance first, living in the end of prosperity, occupying the state of the wealthy self. And then from that consciousness, their giving becomes effortless, joyful, abundant, and for the first time in their life, receiving becomes natural too.

The third law - the channel must be open.

Here's the secret most people never discover. You are not the source. You are the channel. And a channel doesn't hold. A channel flows. If you are trying to create wealth through effort, trying to make things happen through willpower and technique, you will not meet with success.

There is nothing which can separate you from the source of all good. What you give is not yours, but the father's. Thus, you cannot be impoverished by letting go of it. Think of a pipe. If water is flowing through it, the pipe is never empty. But if the pipe starts hoarding the water trying to keep it, what happens? It blocks. It stagnates. The flow stops. This is what happens when you give from fear or hold from fear. You stop being a channel and try to become a container. And containers eventually run dry, but channels flow eternally.

Fear not. It is your father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. The kingdom is within you and you can possess it by entering into a co-partnership with the infinite. When you understand this, giving and receiving become the same movement.

You're not giving your resources, you're allowing infinite resources to flow through you. You're not receiving from the world. You're receiving from consciousness itself. And consciousness is infinite.

Consider someone who provides a service... perhaps healing, teaching, or counseling. If they worry constantly, if I give too much time here, I won't have enough for others. If I charge too little, I won't have enough for myself, their practice will struggle. Clients sense the anxiety. Money comes irregularly. They work themselves to exhaustion. But when they shift their consciousness and understand, I am not the healer. I am the channel through which healing flows. As long as I remain open, the healing is infinite. Everything transforms. The practice flourishes. They have more energy than ever. Clients experience better results. Money flows naturally because they stopped trying to be the source and became the channel.

The fourth law - giving reveals your consciousness.

Here's something that will expose the truth about your current state. Watch how you give. Because giving reveals consciousness. Do you give with resentment? Then you're in poverty consciousness. Do you give with fear? Then you believe in lack. Do you give with superiority? Then you're trying to prove your worth. Do you give with obligation? Then you're living in bondage.

But when you give from wholeness, from overflow, from genuine abundance consciousness, the giving is effortless, natural, joyful.

Start with self, with what I call uncritical observation of self. Not judgment, not condemnation. Simply honest examination of the consciousness from which you're operating.

When Neville truly looked at his giving, he discovered something shocking. He gave to others hoping they would give back to him. He helped people hoping they would help him. He was kind, hoping to be treated kindly. This wasn't giving. This was bargaining, trading, manipulating from poverty consciousness. And because consciousness creates reality, he experienced people who took from him without giving back, who used him, who disappointed him. Why? Because his giving was affirming. I don't have enough. I need something from you. And reality mirrored that consciousness perfectly.

The truth is that in order to have, we must give. But we must give from having, not from needing. Pour out your love abundantly to everyone that asks, and it shall come bounding back to you tenfold. I have never known this to fail. But the love must be poured from fullness, not from emptiness, hoping to be filled.

Every time I prove the law for another, I become more convinced that it is the truth. And I am made that much stronger in the truth. When I give health through understanding of principle, I receive a better sense of health than I had before. This is the law. You receive what you give multiplied. Not the thing you give, but the consciousness you give from.

The fifth law - receiving requires worthiness consciousness.

Now, let's talk about receiving because this is where most people completely sabotage themselves. They pray for wealth but believe they're unworthy. They desire abundance but feel guilty about receiving. They want prosperity but think it's somehow more spiritual to struggle. And so they remain in lack no matter how much they give or how hard they pray.

Don't be ashamed ever of the being you are. Discover it and start the changing of that self because shame blocks receiving. Unworthiness blocks receiving. Guilt blocks receiving. You cannot receive what you believe you don't deserve. You cannot accept abundance while assuming you're meant for poverty. This is why assumption is everything.

Let me tell you the most important lesson about receiving. You must assume you are worthy of something before reality can give it to you. If you accept anything less in your consciousness, that's what you will experience. Assume worthiness. It is your father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. You are a joint heir. You possess the kingdom by asserting your birthright... by coming out with authority, not arrogance. Authority. The authority that comes from knowing who you truly are.

Occupy a state of already having what you desire. When you receive not from begging, but from knowing... it's already yours.

The sixth law - the law of tenfold return.

Now let me share with you one of the most powerful laws: The thing that we offer up is that which we get back tenfold. Most people don't understand what this means. They think if I give $1.00, I'll receive $10.00. And sometimes it works that way. But more often they give $1.00 from fear and instead they receive tenfold fear, tenfold lack, tenfold poverty. Because the law doesn't multiply the thing. It multiplies the consciousness.

If you give from abundance consciousness, you receive tenfold abundance. If you give from lack consciousness, you receive tenfold lack. This is why I always say every time I can prove the law for another, I receive more than I gave. Not because they pay me back, but because I gave from truth consciousness and truth consciousness returns to me multiplied.

When I give health through understanding of principle, by that giving I get a better sense of health than I had before. The law is precise, mechanical, inevitable. Whatever you give, you receive, multiplied by the consciousness you gave from.

Before giving anything... money, time, energy, help... check your consciousness. Am I giving from fear? Then stop. Shift your consciousness first. Am I giving from obligation? Then stop. Find the abundance state first. Am I giving from fullness? Then give freely, knowing the return is already yours.

This isn't manipulation. This is alignment with the law.

The seventh law - becoming the channel of infinite supply.

Now I come to the final and most important principle. The goal is not to give more or receive more. The goal is to become a channel through which infinite supply flows naturally and effortlessly, not a container trying to hoard, not a martyr trying to sacrifice, but a channel through which abundance flows from the infinite source to all who need it.

When you study and realize there is nothing which can separate you from the source of all good, then you know that what you give is not yours, but the father's. This changes everything. You're not giving your money. You're allowing the infinite to give through you. You're not receiving from people. You're receiving from consciousness itself. You're not managing limited resources. You're channeling unlimited supply.

Here's what happens when you truly become this channel. Giving becomes effortless. You give because it's natural, not because you should. Receiving becomes natural. You accept abundance because you know you're worthy. Fear disappears because you're not depending on people or circumstances. You're depending on the infinite source. Gratitude replaces anxiety because you see the abundance that's always been flowing through you.

When you know you are a medium and channel through which all good flows, you know that as long as the channel is open, there is plenty of substance to flow through it. This is the state I'm inviting you into. Not more giving, not more receiving, but becoming the channel through which infinite abundance flows naturally.

In review, there are seven laws that reverse everything you've been taught about giving and receiving. The closed hand creates poverty because consciousness creates after its kind. You cannot give what you do not have because you're giving consciousness, not things. The channel must be open because you're not the source. You're the medium. Giving reveals your consciousness, exposing whether you're in lack or abundance. Receiving requires worthiness consciousness, because you cannot accept what you believe you don't deserve. The law of tenfold return multiplies the consciousness you give from, not the thing you give. And becoming the channel means living as the medium through which infinite supply flows naturally.

When these principles integrate into your consciousness, something extraordinary happens. You stop the anxiety around money. You stop the resentment around giving. You stop the guilt around receiving. You become a conscious channel through which abundance flows freely in both directions.

And here's what that looks like in daily life. Someone asks for help and you give it not from obligation or fear but from genuine overflow. You don't worry about whether you'll have enough time or energy. You know you're channeling from the infinite. Money comes to you and you receive it not with guilt or unworthiness but with natural gratitude. You know you're worthy. You know it's your birthright. You know the kingdom is yours.

An opportunity appears and you recognize it not as something you must struggle to obtain but as the natural outflowing of your abundance consciousness. You occupy the state of already having it and reality conforms.

This is what I mean by entering into copartnership with the infinite, by asserting your birthright by coming out with authority as a joint heir... not arrogance, not spiritual bypassing, but the calm, unshakable knowing that you are worthy. You are a channel and abundance is your natural state.

And when you live from this consciousness, the world must conform to it. People treat you differently. Opportunities appear that were always there, but invisible to your old consciousness. Resources flow to you through paths you never could have imagined... not because you're manipulating reality, but because you've aligned your consciousness with the law.

Find self. Discover the consciousness you're currently living in without shame or judgment. Change that self. Assume the consciousness of the abundant channel. Occupy that state. Live from that consciousness. Give from overflow. Receive with worthiness. Be the medium through which infinite supply flows. And watch as your entire reality transforms to match this new assumption. Because consciousness is the only reality. And consciousness creates after its kind, always, inevitably, perfectly.
